After a successful first season, Cartoon Network and HBO Max have officially announced the renewal of the animated fantasy series Iyanu. The series, which is based on Roye Okupe’s Nigerian graphic novel, was a hit according to performance data. It ranked as the number one series among children aged 2–12 on Cartoon Network and is also a top ten kids and family series on HBO Max. According to the data, it has been watched by more than 525,000 viewers.
Season two will return with ten episodes in 2026, with Iyanu—the main character—facing new enemies and harnessing her mystical powers. In this new season, she will find herself resolving a conflict between Elu and the People of the Deep, who are led by a new opponent. Amidst the conflict and the struggle for power in Yorubaland, Iyanu must find a way to end the war and restore peace to her people.
Alongside the release of the show’s second season, two feature spin-offs from the Iyanu universe have also been confirmed. The first film, The Age of Wonders, is a prequel set 500 years before the rise of Iyanu, and it will be released later this year. The second film is currently in production and is scheduled for release in 2026.
While speaking about the soon-to-be-released season, one of the show’s executive producers, David Steward II said, “The opportunity to expand this world with a second season and two feature films is a testament to the power of meaningful storytelling and innovative creative collaboration. We are grateful for the continued support of our partners at Cartoon Network and Max, and it’s been a lot of fun working with Roye to bring Iyanu to life and build the franchise.”
Okupe, who also serves as series creator, executive producer, and showrunner, commented, “This is a huge win for Iyanu, Lions Forge Entertainment and YouNeek Studio fans around the world. I’m thrilled to continue expanding the world of Iyanu and the YouNeek YouNiverse, and to share this journey with audiences across the globe.” The cast of the new season and the feature films has not been announced yet.
