Mara Brock Akil’s latest series, Forever, has been renewed for a second season at Netflix. The series, which was recently released, was originally viewed as a limited series, but it appears that its popularity and the global demand for more episodes have influenced Netflix’s decision. The series was inspired by Judy Blume’s 1975 novel Forever, which was criticized for its exploration of sex and teenage relationships. However, its impact over the years can’t be denied, and the success of Akil’s Forever series shows that Blume’s work has transcended generations and still holds significant influence.
In the first season, which featured actors like Michael Cooper Jr., Lovie Simone, Xosha Roquemore, Karen Pittman, Wood Harris, Marvin Lawrence Winans III, Ali Gallo, Niles Fitch, and many others, viewers witnessed the tumultuous love affair between Justin (played by Cooper Jr.) and Keisha (played by Simone) as they navigated personal struggles, family expectations, the fear of police brutality, and the search for identity. The season ended with the couple going their separate ways—Keisha heading off to Howard University for college and Justin taking a gap year to become a certified music producer.
Hopefully, the new season will see the main characters exploring relationships outside of each other while continuing to build their individual careers as an athlete and a music producer, respectively. Another angle that could be explored is the lives of their best friends—Darius and Chloe—who supported them through their relationship struggles. It would be great to see their characters developed further in the upcoming season.
In a conversation with Netflix, the show’s creator, Akil, stated: “Season 2 is our love letter back to the people who said, ‘Yes, this is for me.’ We are honoured, we are excited, and we are ready to go even deeper. Thank you to Netflix — Season 2 is coming soon.”
At the end of Season 1, Justin said to Keisha, “Maybe we’ll be ready for each other in 10 years,” but with the show’s renewal, viewers might not have to wait a decade to see their favourite characters together. The first season of the show is still available on Netflix.
