American actor Jonathan Daviss has been selected to star as legendary rapper Snoop Dogg in a new biopic from Universal Pictures. Daviss, known for his roles in Outer Banks, Do Revenge, Age of Summer, and Edge of the World, is expected to deliver an outstanding performance in the upcoming film. The biopic, set to be directed by Craig Brewer (Coming to America, Hustle & Flow), will focus on the life and career of the rapper, exploring how he "entered into the West Coast hip-hop fray.”
This project will join the growing list of music biopics released in recent years, including Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love, 8 Mile, Back to Black, Straight Outta Compton, and Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown. Other upcoming music biopics include Sony’s film about The Beatles, the Ronnie Spector biopic, Michael Jackson’s two-part film Michael, and Bruce Springsteen’s Deliver Me From Nowhere.
Snoop Dogg, Brian Grazer, and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker will serve as the film’s producers. Brewer is currently revising the script that was previously written by Robert Cole. According to reports, this is the first project being released through Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios.
In a statement released by Universal’s Chairwoman, Donna Langley, she stated, “Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy make him one of the most exciting and influential icons in popular culture. We met with Snoop shortly after he acquired Death Row Records and had the opportunity to hear his story in his own words. We are humbled to create the lasting document of this singular artist.”
Since the biopic’s announcement, fans have shown a lot of enthusiasm for the casting choice of Daviss and are clamouring for the release. Hopefully, it becomes a success when it is released. Other cast members and the film’s release date have not been announced yet.
