South African superstar Tyla has done it again. At the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, she won Best Afrobeats for her single Push 2 Start. This is her second VMA win in a row, after taking home the same award last year for Water.

Her moment on stage was electric. Smiling as she accepted the Moon Person trophy, she told fans it was a blessing to be recognized twice in back-to-back years.

The Look That Turned Heads

Tyla didn’t just win an award she owned the red carpet. She wore a vintage Chanel top from 1993, turned into a micro-mini dress**, paired with gold Pandora jewelry and sleek Louboutins. The outfit quickly became one of the night’s most talked-about looks.

A Bit of Drama Last Year

This year’s win was smooth, but last year had a little controversy. When Tyla accepted her first VMA for Water in 2024, she asked for help holding the heavy trophy. Some fans thought she was throwing shade at fellow star Halle Bailey, but Tyla quickly cleared things up online:

“Y’all make everything weird… I was not asking my girl Halle… We just girls.”

Bailey herself confirmed there was no issue. Even Cardi B jumped in to defend Tyla, saying people were blowing it out of proportion.

More Than Afrobeats

Tyla is also using her platform to push for better recognition of African music. While Afrobeats is the popular label, she has reminded audiences that Africa has many other sounds, from amapiano (her specialty) to soukous, juju, and mbalax.

A Rising Legacy

By winning two consecutive Best Afrobeats VMAs, Tyla has set herself apart. She’s not only making hits, she’s shaping the global conversation around African music, while looking stylish doing it.

For Tyla, this isn’t just about awards. It’s about carrying a new sound from Johannesburg to the world, and showing that African artists deserve every spotlight they get.
