Wizkid’s documentary debut set to premiere at Tribeca in June
Global music icon Wizkid is set to make history once again—this time on the silver screen. Wizkid: Long Live Lagos, a feature-length documentary tracing the Nigerian superstar’s meteoric rise from the streets of Lagos to global stages, is officially premiering at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Karam Gill, the 83-minute film offers an intimate, visually stunning exploration of Wizkid’s life, artistry, and cultural impact. Slated under the festival’s Spotlight+ category, the documentary is part of a curated lineup celebrating extraordinary global voices—marking a major moment not only for Afrobeats but for African storytelling at large.
According to the official synopsis, Long Live Lagos blends rare behind-the-scenes footage, live performances, and personal moments to paint a vivid portrait of Ayodeji Balogun, the artist known worldwide as Wizkid. The film dives deep into his Lagos roots, creative evolution, and the impact of his music on a new generation of African youth. It also examines how he continues to redefine what it means to be an African global superstar in a world where the lines between culture and commerce are increasingly blurred.
The premiere event will be followed by a live conversation between Wizkid and director Karam Gill, offering festivalgoers a chance to hear directly from the minds behind the project.
This moment marks yet another career milestone for Wizkid, whose groundbreaking achievements include Grammy Awards, international collaborations with artists like Drake and Beyoncé, and global tours that have solidified his place as one of the most influential African artists of the 21st century.
The film also joins Tribeca’s Expressions of Black Freedom program—a category dedicated to uplifting Black voices and narratives around the world.
